Today's Internet begins to integrate heterogenous devices, institutions and people for communications, transactions, content distribution and information processing. Tomorrow's Internet- and associated infractructure- must serve the vastly larger scale and more complex scope of the ubiquitous computing and information ecology. In order to do so, multiple dimensions of capability, safety, standards, practice, policy and economics must be specified and understood, and problems must be solved. Broad concensus and engineering excellence remain the bedrock for competitors to innovate, create value and provide the new foundations for others to build upon. XIWT will facilitate collaboration for information sharing and analysis among senior researchers and technical strategists to track, assess and realize the benefits of emerging computing and communications technologies, and to accelerate the growth of application markets. XIWT will periodically present broad industry viewpoints to the public, government and other organizations. It will motivate and facilitate sponsored invitational workshops and public meetings (for example see EPF, below) to promote essential consensus and action. XIWT will facilitate member-directed working team efforts for in-depth analyses of exemplary emerging technology and market drivers, and as appropriate motivate and support testbed initiatives.
A focal effort will deal with ubiquitous networked computing for residential health care maintenance. A description of this initiative is available to prospective members at XIWT Residential Health Information Technology Systems.
IPEX: is a DARPA sponsored collaborative research program to characterize Internet traffic, and make data available for research. Watch for news or join and shape the program. XIWT and FSTC held a meeting of the Electronic Payments Forum on February 27-28, 2002 in Atlanta. Details and presentations are at www.epf.net. FSTC and XIWT will support future meetings pending participant interest.
